Worked example

A data set is 4, 5, 6, 7, and 100. Is the mean or the median a better measure of the typical value, and why?

The median is 6, but the mean is (4+5+6+7+100)/5 = 24.4. The single outlier, 100, drags the mean far above every other value, so the median (6) better represents the typical value. Outliers move the mean much more than the median.
